Tooth extraction is a very minor, routine procedure. Before the process is started, an x-ray is taken and examined to analyze tooth’s position and roots. After tooth extraction, the socket is covered in sterile gauze and bleeding is controlled. Sometimes, stitches are required to close up the socket. Often, patients have some swelling and discomfort after tooth extraction; however, these are easily controlled with over-the-counter non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. Ice packs and soft foods can also help mitigate pain and swelling.
Wisdom teeth in particular need to be monitored in order to remove them when necessary. Regular x-rays at general dentist appointments help us keep an eye on your child’s wisdom teeth. When wisdom teeth begin to grow in, they often crowd the teeth around them, causing crooked teeth, or begin to grow in sideways, pressing against another tooth in what’s called impacting.
